Judgements

Judgement by Rosea Lake reflecting how women are judged by their skirt length | Follow Mode-sty offers stylish modest clothing tznius jewish orthodox muslim hijab islamic mormon lds pentecostal evangelical christian
"Judgements" by Rosea Lake
While in high school, Rosea Lake, currently a student at Capilano University in Vancouver, created a powerful image showing how the world judges women based on their skirt length. Here piece is titled "Judgements" and was originally posted by Rosea in January and almost immediately went viral and prompted a lot of discussion
One article that stood out to us was a piece by sociologist and professor Lisa Wade that discussed how women, more so then men, have to be acutely aware of what to wear in different settings because the ramifications can be harsh. For women who dress modestly, and therefore limit the skirt lengths they will consider wearing, it is interesting to consider how these social understandings do and don't affect us. Dr. Wade's full piece is below we'd love to here your thoughts on "Judgements" and on Dr. Wade's analysis.

Covered Up Without Burning Up

Summer Styling Secrets: Staying Modest Yet Cool
Guest Post by English style blogger Nash Amber of Presenting Nash Amber

Most of us ladies enjoy the summer time as it gives us every opportunity to get dressed up in lovely maxis, floral prints and of course we all get to wear fabulous glasses. Now, when it comes to dressing modestly in the summer there are a few challenges it seems, as many high streets stores do not cater for those desiring to dress modest.

So what do we wear, if we do know our worth and want to look pretty yet not compromise on modesty?!

Well here are few looks, put together to help you stay cool and stylish in the lovely sun, without compromising on modesty.

How to stay cool in the summer while still being modest in dress?

The answer to staying cool in the summer is not found in wearing items that are short or revealing. Staying cool is about being wise on the choices you make in the colours and materials you wear.
Here are some great looks that will keep you cool from day to night. They feature a few of my favorite items.

Where do you draw the line?

Finding the precise hem length you want can be a challenge.
Shopping for that hem length online can be even more challenging.
Many online retailers do not have filter options that allow sorting by length. Thus forcing us to manually search though hundreds of items. Additionally, almost all retail pictures are on models 5'9 or taller, which can make it difficult to determine where a hem will fall on you. You may be able to get around the visual disconnect if your shopping at one of the few retailers who provide you with the length measurements for their items. Of course, this means that you need to know what those measurements translate to on your body. Otherwise your left wondering, how long is a 35 inch hemline on me?

At Mode-sty we always provide the length of our skirts and dresses. And we want to make sure that the length information is truly useful to you. To assist we've created the guide below. We want you to have confidence in knowing where a garment will hit on your leg. Thus, saving you from unnecessary returns and uncertainty when making a purchase.

The Disconnect that Fosters Our Vision

We have big dreams at Mode-sty. At the core of that dream is addressing a disconnect that is illustrated in the two ads above. Dive in!

Are you ready to head to the pool or beach and make a splash in comfort and style?
Wearing a modest bating suit used to mean improvising by wearing a shirt over a swimsuit or guys board shorts. Although this solution kept us covered it also weighed us down and made us stand out. Thankfully those days are gone as there are now a slew of options for the modest swimmer. With options to fit any level of coverage you can know head to the beach or pool in comfort, style and modesty.
We've heard from so many women that investing in a swimsuit they felt comfortable in transformed their beach and pool outings from awkward and uncomfortable to fun and relaxing. That' why we're so excited to be carrying several top brands from low to full coverage. Below is a sampling of what available now in our shop

Super Heroine: Do the clothes make the heroine?

Thanks to one of our followers for telling us about artist Michael Lee Lunsford. He challenged himself to do an "exercise in character design, attempting to clothe the heroines nearly all the way." He did't want to simply do a skin tight bodysuit and he wanted to maintain the look of the original costumes.

We put Michael's pictures on the left and the traditional comic on the right- do these super heroines feel the same to you even though they are now fully clothed? What do you think?

The Modest Bride: Have your cake and eat it too!

Kate Middleton
Strapless wedding gowns are “the standard for wedding dresses and that won’t change anytime soon.” This is according to Kim Forrest, the editor of WeddingWire, an online marketplace for engaged couples. While the vast majority of wedding dresses are strapless more sleeved options are slowly becoming available. This obviously make us very excited but we were delighted to find out that there are a whole host of women who are sick of the strapless domination. Posts at Jezebel and Slate decry the universally unfaltering look a strapless dress gives most women and the conspiracy of designers too lazy to make sleeves.

However our most powerful ally in the quest for wedding dresses with sleeves has been Princess Kate Middleton. Her wedding in 2011 to Prince William gave the green light to designers that sleeves can be young, sophisticated and beautiful. As put by the designer Lela Rose in a piece for the New York Times, “The royal wedding sort of put a stamp of approval on sleeves for brides who have thought previously they can look dated.” Thankfully we've been spotting more and more stunning wedding dresses with sleeves since then.

I'm not the Mother-of-the-Bride

Summer is around the corner and many of us will have lots formal events to attend. Unfortunately, most department stores have equated modest and formal dresses with Mother-of-the-Bride dresses. This is limiting for those of us who want to be sophisticated, festive, and elegant and are not related to the bride. The problem with Mother-of-the-Bride dresses is that they tend to be very mature looking and not trendy. The most common style is a sleeveless dress with a matching jacket.

Somethings Gotta Show: The Modest Girls Dilemma

This was on Nordstrom's dressess page a week or so ago. While we love the styles, for anyone who prefers medium coverage or higher none of these dresses would work as is. This "dress guide" clearly illustrates a modest women's struggle when she goes out shopping. Almost every where we go we are constantly presented with this same women and the options for her. Since we don't fit this image we're left to fend for ourselves  It often seems like asking for a dress with sleeves, high neckline and length is some sort of crazy request. We're nearly always faced with the same dilemma:

Coverage at Your Level

Defining what's modest clothing is tricky business and we know that everyone has their own specific level of coverage that they are comfortable with. For simplicity at Mode-sty we've created two categories: Medium Coverage and Full Coverage. We have defined them as:
  • Medium coverage: Short/elbow length sleeve, to the knee or below hemline and high neckline.
  • Full coverage: Full length sleeves, full length hemline and high neckline.
These two levels are the hardest to shop for because of the limited stylish selections at affordable prices. When choosing what we will carry, we always look for styles that are flattering with a looser fit so that you will not need to layer or alter.
Once you no longer have to worry about coverage, we believe in showcasing your fashion sense with style, color, patterns and print. We want you to easily be able to find things that fit your life and enjoy shopping for clothing. To see some of the styles we love, visit our pinterest board which is organized by these two coverage levels.
What do you think, does this categorization work for you? Let us know in the comments!

Designer Crush: Alexander Terekhov

Alexander Terekhov
We have a crush.
Actually we may be in love.
The object of our affection (and soon yours) is Russian designer Alexander Terekhov. We don't love him for his boyish good looks (he is adorable) but for his beautiful designs that are classic, feminine, modern and modest. Terekhov created his first dress at age 10 for his mother and now at 30 he has become a "designer to watch." His debut collection was in 2004 and in every collection since then there are pieces we love. However, for his Pre-Fall 2013-14 collection his choice of color, patterns and silhouettes is enough to make any girl swoon but for someone looking for stylish modest clothing it's a dream come true. Beautiful feminine silhouettes that are sophisticated and versatile- no layering needed.
So do you have a favorite? We want them all!

Making Modest Style Affordable

After looking through our Pinterest boardFacebook posts and Instagram we often get asked why we mostly show expensive luxury designers that are out of reach for the average women. People ask us to feature more inexpensive options that they could actually purchase.

The problem is there are very few beautiful, stylish, contemporary modest pieces at affordable prices. Which is exactly why we founded Mode-sty. At Mode-sty we are committed to stylish, modest and affordable fashion. Currently the marketplace looks like this:

Underwhelmed by Undershirts

As a conservative dresser you probably you have several long sleeved and short sleeved tees in your closet that you use for layering under plunging necklines and sleeveless tops. It's great that layering is a trend and that there are so many options and combinations to be stylish when you layer, but if your anything like us you sometimes wish you didn't have to layer.

There are still too few stylish but not overly revealing tops and dresses out there. A sad fact, that has made us collectors of layering shells (seriously, we have them in every shade of the rainbow). And frankly having to layer sucks because it usually:

That’s Not Modest! What do you consider a modest look?

Many women don’t buy into the revealing trends that are so prevalent nowadays and some of these women identify themselves as modest dressers.

So what does it mean to be a modest dresser? That answer depends on who you ask. What you may consider a modest outfit may not be to others. While everyone may agree that a strapless cutout mini dress doesn’t qualify as modest, defining what does isn't as clear cut.

We’ve found that modest dressing is really a continuum comprised of many factors, and we’ve identified ten. Your view on each of the following factors determines your personal definition of what is a modest look.

It's made with rich soft cotton in a sophisticated midnight blue and has three quarter length sleeves, a longer length, a seemingly loose shape and high neckline.
